The Chifley Home Education Centre was officially opened by Prime Minister Julia Gillard on 18 September 2010. The opening marked the completion of a two year project to develop the adjoining house to Chifley Home at 10 Busby Street in Bathurst.
In 2008 Bathurst Regional Council acquired the adjoining property and commenced a transformation to what can now be seen as the Education Centre. This strong commitment to preserving the memory of Ben and Elizabeth, together with their impact on all Australians, was a driving force behind the Centre's development.
With a replica sitting room from the 1940s, visitors to the Education Centre are provided with a unique hands-on experience that is reflected by the ambience of the wireless recounting the local news of the day, family sing-a-longs around the pianola, or relaxing quietly with a detective novel or newspaper from the period.
The Centre also boasts a modern exhibition area that hosts temporary exhibitions to enhance the Chifley collection or aspects of Australia's political and cultural history.
Audio visual and interactive displays are a feature in the Centre. Strong links have been formed to ensure that archival material depicting Ben and Elizabeth Chifley, by their relatives, colleagues and friends is available for viewing at the Centre.
The Chifley Home will remain a unique and iconic museum. It proudly boasts the first education centre of its kind devoted to sharing the story of a home of an Australian Prime Minister.
Chifley Home and the new Education Centre are open for guided tours from Saturday to Monday with tours commencing at 10.am and 12.noon. For further information and group bookings, contact the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, ph. 6332 1444.
